STATEN ISLAND REGISTER,
Staten Island, N.Y.

This was a redesign and training program for this Staten Island, N.Y., weekly paper. Our redesign was launched in November, 2002.

When Dan McDonough Jr. took over as owner of The Staten Island Register, he vowed to do two things. The first was to keep the strong, journalistic tone of this New York City weekly. The
second was to change it's outdated design, something that hadn't been done since it's launch in 1966.

Beacuse we listened to his first wish, it was easy to understand and deliver on his second one. We showed Dan and his staff dozens of prototypes for a new nameplate until we all understood not only which design worked for them, but also what identity they wanted to project in this new era of the Staten Island Register.

One of the biggest challenges was to provide a design that was modern, serious, visually strong and easy to produce by a small weekly staff working on a tight schedule. The solution included a simplified design, training and a clearly written stylebook.

Kevin Dilley served as project manager for this redesign with Kristen Powell serving as lead designer. Bill Ostendorf and two other designers also assisted the design team. Kevin handled training and was on hand for the launch.
