LIFESTYLES, Passaic, N.J.

Lifetime magazine (which was renamed Lifestyles as part of the redesign) was supposed to be an upscale fashion and lifestyles magazine but its design was clearly not in sync with its mission. in addition to a complete typographic overall and improved layout of editorial content, we redesigned dozens of silly advertising directory headers into a standard format that mirrored the editorial page flags.

We tried to frame everything editorial in white space, including indenting the columns on all pages and using that space for “breakouts” like quotes, captions and info boxes. In addition to adding to the more sophisticated look, this also separated editorial content from advertising – a key issue in this case since the design of the ads continued to lack the sophistication of editorial.

The redesign launched in March, 2003.

Bill Ostendorf served as project coordinator and Kristen Powell and one other designer handled the design and launch duties.
