THE DAYTONA BEACH
NEWS-JOURNAL,
Daytona Beach, Fla.

Though the staff in Daytona Beach was enthusiastic about the redesign, a dramatic nameplate change had some concerned about a negative reader backlash. But, of the roughly 200 calls on launch day, the vast majority focused on the loss of two daily carrtoons, which were later added back. Readers loved the redesign.

The redesign brought the look of the paper, a 115,000-circulation paper owned by the Davidson family, to a higher level that focused on cleanliness, organization and reader needs - such as type legibility and navigation.

In addition to the redesign, a training program for the News-Journal staff focused on several areas including design and photography.

Bill Ostendorf served as project coordinator and trainer with Kristen Powell serving as lead designer. The design team included Monica Moses, Kevin Dilley and two other designers.

Circulation has grown steadily since the redesign.
